24-year-old Gabrielle Hsu is a Taiwanese-American pianist and piano teacher currently based in New York City. She is a winner of various honors and awards such as Grand Prize in the 2021 New York Artists International Competition, first prize in the 2021 Prima Volta Music Competition, second prize in the 2022 Hartford Chopin International Piano Competition, as well as prizes in the 2022 Gershwin Competition, 2020 Philadelphia International Piano Competition Live Stream Awards, 2019 William Knabe International Piano Competition, and 2017 National YoungArts Competition.
In 2019, Gabrielle gave recitals throughout the Netherlands while participating in The International Holland Music Sessions; and in 2016, she was one of the featured performers in the “World Piano Talents” concert series of the XXII International Chopin Festival “Lato z Chopinem” in Busko-Zdroj, where she performed in two recitals. As a laureate of various competitions, Gabrielle had performed in Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall New York multiple times for solo and chamber music performances. Her past orchestral performances include collaborations with conductors Alexander Timofeev (Mozart Piano Concerto No.17 in G Major, KV 453) at age 10, and with Jean Perrault at age 13, and Timothy Keleher at age 17 as the soloist for Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor, Op.11.
Gabrielle believes in the importance of giving back to the community and strives to share her love of classical music with a wide range of audiences. From 2018-2021, she was a fellow of NEC’s Community Partnerships and Performances Program through which she has the opportunity to teach and perform throughout the greater Boston area. In 2020-2021, she participated in the Boston Hope Music Project where she was able to give piano lessons to healthcare workers.
In the summers, Gabrielle has participated in many festivals. In June 2021, she was a Young Artist at the PianoTexas International Festival and Academy where she participated on a full scholarship. She studied with Professors Arie Vardi (2017) and Hung-kuan Chen (2018) during her participation in Aspen Music Festival and School, and in 2019 she studied with Matti Raekallio at Bowdoin International Music Festival. Gabrielle has performed in master classes of renowned pianists and teachers such as Gary Graffman, Jacques Rouvier, Michel Béroff, Stanislav Ioudenich, Ursula Oppens, and Jerome Lowenthal .
Gabrielle currently maintains a private studio in NYC and works at Steinway & Sons as a Brand Ambassador. She received her MM degree in Piano Performance at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Professor Alexandre Moutouzkine and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied with Victor Rosenbaum and HaeSun Paik. Her past primary teachers also include Veda Zuponcic (2003-2015) and Chiu-Ling Lin (2015-2017).
